CHAPTER EIGHT

‘I WILL DO everything in my power to make you happy, Sarah. I mean that.’

The expression in his eyes told her he meant his words. He was no longer trying to convince her through the force of their desire for each another. He was no longer trying to cloud her judgement by leaning in too close and making her blood leap and her pulse pound.

It should’ve made her happy! Majed was vowing to do everything in his power to ensure that she and their child would have not just a good life but a wonderful life.

Except give you his love.

She swallowed. Why did that have to matter so much? Love would come. It would evolve naturally from mutual respect and friendship.

Oh, but it would be a pale imitation of what she’d expected whenever she’d thought about love and marriage in the past.

But...

Maybe Majed was right. Their relationship would never descend into the bitter acrimony that her parents’ marriage had. Hadn’t she vowed to do anything to spare her child that?

‘Tell me more about this old design ambition of yours.’

She glanced across at him. He half-reclined against the cushions and stared out at the river as the barge slid across the water. He looked lazy, at ease...almost slumberous. It occurred to her that she’d not seen him the slightest bit relaxed since they’d arrived in Keddah Jaleel. It soothed something inside her.

She crossed her legs and reached for a piece of Turkish delight. ‘Oh, it was just a phase—like wanting to be a firefighter when I was ten or a mermaid when I was seven.’

‘You wanted to be a mermaid?’

His slow grin warmed her blood...and her heart. Pressing both hands to her chest in exaggerated longing, she said, ‘Desperately,’ making him laugh. And then she popped the Turkish delight into her mouth before it melted in her fingers.

He leaned forward to pour her a glass of exquisite home-made lemonade. ‘How old were you when you decided you wanted to be a designer?’

‘Fourteen, I think.’ It was hard to feign nonchalance but she did her best. ‘I always loved making things—as a kid I loved anything crafty.’ The desire to make pretty things had always lived inside her, but it wasn’t until she’d discovered sewing that it had really flared into life, filling her with a sense of purpose. ‘I intended to study design at university.’

‘You didn’t?’

‘I started.’ She sipped her lemonade, hoping its sweetness would help counter the bitterness of the disappointment that could still rise up inside her all these years later, reminding her what a flake she was...what a failure.

Her heart thumped and she risked a quick glance at Majed’s profile. He deserved a better wife than she’d ever make—a more polished and accomplished wife.

‘You started?’

His gaze speared hers, belying the laziness of his posture, and for a moment it felt as if he were plumbing the depths of her soul and laying bare all her secrets. She dragged her gaze from his, feigning interest in a passing cargo boat.
